I feel that specific politics needs to be left outside the door before entering into the church. The Bible tells us to pray for ALL leaders and doesn't specify one specifically.

People need to make themselves aware of the current events and make an informed decision, but most importantly, we all need to PRAY about it and seek Him and His ways.

It irritates me to go to church and get into any type of debate with someone over politics, especially when the person trying to talk to me about it is basing their ideals because of a particular party versus the actual issues that affect us all. As I said previously, we all need to be and stay informed.

A parent's duty is to be their child's overseer. Likewise, a pastor is to be their congregation's spiritual overseer. As a parent, if I see my child being led in a way that I feel is harmful, I have a duty to warn my child. Likewise, if a pastor feels someone or something will bring spiritual harm to the members of their congregation or to the society, then he or she also has a duty to warn his or her congregation and other Christians. After all, keeping silent leads to the type of society we presently have. The society where moral values are constantly going down the drain. A society where young adults who say they want to remain virgins till marriage are made fun of, where abstinence is wrong and abortion is right, where praying is wrong but taking away the ten commands (rules for good behavior that benefits everyone in a society) is right, where doctors, CEO's lawyers, etc are being greedy and unethical because they don't have morals, a society where you have to have bars around your house to feel safe because people have no respect for life nor each other, a society where a church is no longer a sacried place but just another place to rob. We as Christians have to wake up for the sake of our society and for the sake of our children and for the sake of other Christians. We need to remember that God sets the rules, not us. When we go through the Bible and pick and choose which rules we will and will not follow, our religion is self-religion. When we accept all of God rules regardless of whether we like them personally or not, then that's Christianity. Christianity is not about us, its about Christ and what he says and believes.

You are absolutely correct, mhelen, however we must be careful to realize that it is not our place to tell others how it is they should act. A parent must do their best to raise their child in the way of the Lord, and if they did their job right and if they pray for their child and if their child is right with God, then they will not stray. The same goes for pastors and their congregations.

One important thing many should realize (I fear many Christians just don't get it), is that we are not the only people on this planet. Yes, we have been chosen by God to do his work in the world. But, doing his work means leading by example, and not by forcing others into our own morality through political means. That, as we have seen clearly since the BEGINNING of the Christian Church, has only cause more strife and struggle and resentment against us.

Being CHRISTIAN means that we follow the example of Christ. Yes, it means following the Bible, but it means much more than just blind acceptance of rules. We need to understand what the Bible tells us. We need to keep contact with God through prayer and hope in earnest that we are doing his will and not our own. Do not let your personal convictions get in the way of God's work.

So, what I am effectively trying to say is: lead by example. Love your enemies AND your friends. Accept all, and always ask yourself "What Would Jesus Do?"
:D

I believe the most important thing we cna do when embracing our political passion, is to pray GOD's Will Be Done.  Each individual is guided through thier own relationship with Christ, which leads us to the Candidates we support or endorse.  Some choose to be vocal about it and some choose not to be; but I firmly beleive there is a separation of Church and State for a reason.  Imagine a Pastor who may be misguided for one reason or another, and he leads his congregation in the wrong direction...it has happened.  We need to pray for our Pastors and our Leaders; Pray they have a real and true relationship with Christ and that thier decisions which affect those around them will be guided by God...which is EVERYTHING they do as Dr. Murdock discussed today on TV...the sowing of our seeds.

I also believe that Churches are tax exempt for a reason and if a Pastor wishes to influence his congregation with political views, then his church should no longer be tax exempt.  Our true decision making comes from within, not from our Pastor...they are merely God's tool for us.  Just the same, we cannot allow the media or celebrities to influence us with thier own political prophecies.  We need to look at the facts, research them and compare them...then PRAY about it and let God make the decision for us.

Thanks tiffkathryn & gboschjr. While I agree with many things said by mhelen (CEO's, lawyers, etc...) taking advantage and having a lack of morals, not feeling safe in our own homes (so true), I agree with the fact that we don't want to be mislead or misguided. That's why we have to pray and ask for God's divine direction, not man.

I really appreciate this discussion board and the opportunity to address such timely issues and offer dissenting views. That being said, the biggest concern I have when pastors endorse political candidates is that it shows to the world that the church is fractured. Unfortunately, the "church" in the United States (and the rest of the world) is divided by doctrine, race, economic status, etc. Pastors then will naturally disagree on which candidates to endorse and it gives the "world" one more opportunity to point out the divisions. However, I do think that Christian should vote (prayerfully) and pray for our leaders, whether we elected them or not.

Why not? Pastors are human beings just like anyone else and have opinions like everyone else.
The white conservative evangelicals have been doing that over the years and have even preached politics from their pulpits. If them ,why not us.

This is a country of "Freedom of Speech"... Having said that, I am of the opinion that Pastors should chose carefully of when they should offer their endorsement. As a private citizen pastors or anyone else should be allowed to cast an opinion or support for whomever they chose. It becomes influential and irresponsible for any leader to impose their beliefs upon the flock of people God has allowed them to lead.  Remember lead by example... not by influence or intimidation.
