25"Caesar's," they replied.
He said to them, "Then give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's."

There is a SEPARATION.Jesus was upset when they tryed to mix the world inside the temple, there must be a separation. The House of the Lord it is for us to worship, listen the word of God, have communion with the boyd of christ.
The main problem is that the church is letting the world come inside more and more. And the more this happens the more we will not have power to win the battles.

Very good point, Ana. Jesus did effectively preach of a separation of worldly powers and one's relationship with God. Though it is important that we pray for those who are in power, and it is even okay for us to support a candidate.

What I think is NOT okay, however, is when preachers or people in general spew negativity and hatred and lies about people because of their own disagreements. I have heard pastors say that "if you vote democrat, you are going to hell." Who is to say that republicans are more righteous than the democrats. I am pretty sure that nearly ALL politicians are at least somewhat corrupt. Maybe not. That is not the point.

We need to be careful when we go pointing fingers and accusing and endorsing one candidate over another. We need to remember about the overly righteous pharisees and Sadducees, who were using the church for their political means. Do not revert to the corruption inherent in the church before Jesus Himself came to overturn that...

Good information. I honestly do struggle with the "separation of church and state." I know my concerns with our country and want to influence, through voting, a measure of morals. I hear repeatedly that we can't "legislate morality" but as a taxpaying citizen, I then see my hard-earned dollars being used to fund programs that I absolutely believe are abhorrent to God and are personally offensive to me. I can't claim that I have any answers and I do not believe that any party (Republican or Democratic) can define how a Christian should vote, but I do believe that Christians have the same right as all citizens to vote with their conscious.

Nothing I think could be further from the truth. It is not seperation but truth that makes us and keeps us holy in an unclean world. As far as seperation of church and state...that is a man made thing that our government made to keep the king from running the church and essentially having all the power. In England thats the way it was and the founding fathers saw the corruption it bread and eliminated. It was never intended to keep God or religion out of government but to keep currupt leaders from running the government and the church.

As far as the purpose of the church is to be emersed in the world and yet different. I think the more attractive, vibrant, and relevant we can make our buildings, music, dress, etc... the better. Hymns are not spiritual...most of them were bar tunes that men and women took and put godly lyrics too. Why to reach people... At the end of the day church is not about singing a song, being fed by a sermon, or being encouraged...it is about one thing...People!!! We can't forget that. That is why Jesus came that he might set the captive free, bring sight to the blind, heal the lame. The worse thing a church can be is a sanctuary but it must be the center of life and community. It must go further, reach deeper, love harder, and capture a generation. When you speak of th world coming into the church I am assuming you mean its influence on style of music, dress, etc... if that is not the case than please let me know. If you were going to be a missionary to Sudan or China would you not first learn the language, the acceptable dress code, the culture, etc.. before you went? The answer of course is yes. We do that so that we can reach a group of people that will otherwise die and go to hell. Why then in our churches do we expect people to come in and adapt to our culture? Should we not be learning the culture, dressing the right way, and speaking the language of the generation around us...the world around us. I say the answer must be yes as well.

As far as "give to Caeser what is caesers and to God what is God's" he was making a huge cultural point about honoring authority not about seperation or holiness.

These are just some thoughts...sorry if I come accross overly passionate about this topic it is only because I truly believe the heart beat of God is not an anointed speaker or great worship service but it is using every ounce of influence and resource to reach lost people not to teach saved people the Bible...
