about reverse prejudice

I just read a Streaming Faith Daily Devotional message called Raising Unbiased Kids in a Bigoted World, by Alan Riley. I couldn't find anywhere to make a comment on it, and after a bit of searching I found this area of your web site and a section on race relations, so I decided to put my comments herein instead. His article was excellent, but I want to talk a bit about reverse prejudice. I grew up in Los Angeles, California, lived in Leimert (sp?) Park until I was about 13 yrs old, then my parents, who were prejudiced against black people, moved out of the area due to the "white flight" phenomenon. We moved to Westchester, a mostly white area, middle class area. Later on I lived in various places in L.A. and Orange Counties and ended up settled in Long Beach for about 10 years. I lived in L.A. county from birth in 1951 until 1999 when I moved to northern Arizona. I am caucasian. I was around many African Americans for half of my life (I am now 57). I have absolutely no prejudices and never did, in spite of my prejudiced parents. I was just sort of born understanding that color is no issue. I just see people as people, and it's about a person not their color. I want to comment about reverse prejudice, that is, black people who are intensely prejudiced against all white people, and I have experienced this myself quite often. A lot has been said over the years about white people needing to let go of their prejudices against black people, but little is said about reverse prejudice, and I see it as a big problem. A lot of times, it is also very hidden, where they will be nice to me to my face, even pretend to be my friend, but somewhere down the line I find they were just setting me up for some sort of bashing and were never a sincere friend. Other times, the prejudice is quite obvious, either by negative comments about my color, or by avoidance of all white people including me. An example of avoidance was when I was attending Audubon Jr. High School, back in the 60s, around the era when JFK was assassinated. At that school, all of the black kids stuck together, and all of the white kids stuck together, and never talked to each other. For awhile, I had a black friend there, but eventually she left her friendship with me due to peer pressure from other black kids that turned her against me, for absolutely no reason other than I was white. What causes this? I believe it is partly the parents to blame for their reverse prejudice, and partly because in their life, they have never met and experience a good kind nonprejudiced white person and all they have seen is evil and abusive and prejudiced white people. They think whites cannot be trusted at all, even if they seem very nice. I wish something could be done about this. I got badly burned too many times trying to be friends with black people. I realize that not every black person has reverse prejudice, and I realize that this has changed a lot over the years in our culture and continues to improve on both sides, yet I would just like to see people addressing the reverse prejudice issue more and being more aware that it exists. I would not entirely avoid black people because of this problem, but it has made me quite wary, unless I absolutely know for certain that a person is not going to be prejudiced against me because I am white. Any comments?

I can attest to this kind of reverse prejudice. I got fired for saying "spicy catfish".
