Face the Music
Milan Ford

So I'm driving home from work the other day, and decided to turn the radio on to a local gospel music station. Something (I have to admit) I rarely do.

They were playing a popular praise and worship song from recording artist Israel Houghton entitled, Friend Of God. Great song. Incredible message.

After listening to the song, and having somewhat of a party in my minivan at the thought of an awesome God, creator of all the universe, who has chosen to love us, be mindful of us, and to even go so far as to call us His friend, I was quite saddened by the song that came on next.

This time, by a totally different artist.

I promise you...the artist must have named 'the devil' at least 32 times throughout the whole song, before I finally decided to shut it off. The essence of the song was to encourage believers to 'take back' everything 'the devil' stole from us as believers.

Now although there is plenty room for some form of theological debate as to why the artist felt it necessary to pen a song with such a purpose, I couldn't help but wonder if the essence and design of praise and worship is to help believers like you and I become fixated on the name and nature of God...

...rather than His defeated foe.

In addition to the spoken word of God, one of the most powerful tools you and I have to help align our faith and relationship with God is through praise. Our ability to become consumed with His character and attributes is essential to our growth in Him.

The content of our praise should always reflect our faith in Him. The content of our worship should also always reflect our maturity in Him. Without His heart at the core of our lives, our songs will begin to be set on things and concerns that God (to be quite honest) may not even be concerned about.

Like prayer, praise and worship is not a time for us to try updating an all-knowing God about our private concerns and pains. But rather it is a tool to become completely engaged with Him and His perspective regarding our lives.

So why do I bring that up? How is that at all relevant? (I'm glad you asked...)

News flash: We Are Free!

We are free from the bondage of man.
We are free from the bondage of sin.
We are no longer defeated.
We are no longer scorned.
We are no longer cast down.

Our lives, as well as our songs of praise, have to always reflect our renewed position in Christ.

Colossians 3:2-3 states to "set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died (in Christ) and your life is hidden with Christ in God." This passage is a clear reminder that there is nothing you and I face in this life that can surpass the incredible liberty we now have as believers in Christ!

I encourage us all today to begin to face the music. Let's all take a strong examination of the songs we embrace and sing as praise and worship. We must all mature to the point that His message can never be lost or exchanged for an exciting or soulful melody.

I think Dick Gregory said it best. As a panelist one year for Tavis Smiley's State Of The Black Union, he said something I will never forget:

"...my momma was so busy telling me about the devil, I became a grown man before I found out the beauty of God."

Let's show the world together how much we've grown.
Today, let's face the music.

One more thing - to Milan -

Incredible means not credible, or not believable.

The message of God as our Friend is infinitely credible.

Not to be soooo deep, but....

I am a worship leader and "Friend of God" is one of my very favorite songs to minister. Nearly every time, I get caught up to tears at the bridge "God Almighty, Lord of glory, You have called me friend"... "How great is our God" is another song that brings focus to the vast awesomeness of the God of the universe with whom we we have the joy of being in relationship. The bible says "Magnify the Lord with me"--that means in simple terms...let's make God large, y'all. So the point about focusing on God vs. satan is a strong, biblically solid one.

At the same time, the bible tells us to be "well-balanced", for our adversary, the devil, roams about seeking whom he may devour. So we do need to be aware of his devices, and use praise is a weapon against him.

I've been where other bloggers have been--lost home, husband, perspective. And Praise God now I'm living in the restoration. The song "Trading my sorrows" talks about the things we are trading (sorrow for joy, sickness and pain for healng), but we've taken it a step further and changed the words to "I've traded (not "I'm trading") my sorrows...Jesus ALREADY bought the victory for us, we walk in it now, not wait to walk in it.

"Taking it back" is meant to be a valid, victorious response to a satanic attack. It's appropriate to celebrate those times of victory over the enemy...but perhaps clarity would be given in using the past tense. We ARE victorious (not gonna be--ARE). We ARE healed, we ARE free.

And it's good to remind the devil-and ourselves-of that truth.

Peace.

I think that what you are saying s okay, but the song is describing the waywe are not letting the devil take anything from us. We are not giving him glory we are giving GOD the praise for giving us the strength to fight him off. Yes, I'm taking backing everything that he has taken from me. I give God the recognition for this.

Bro Milan

WELL SAID!!!! GREAT THEOLOGY!!
We pastorss must begin to teach the 'loving' nature of God, and not just the
consequences of Satan. I know that evil is a reality. However, we forget that
God is love.

Thank you for your profound witness.

For those who are real christians & read/study the word we understand that there are only 3 things the devil comes for: "to steal, kill & destroy"-John 10:10...but than again there are those "DEEP" christians who never go through anything-they're just too deep to go through...You don't know who has gone through what but through this song you will know that they came out of what they were going through & if there's any thing better to say after worshipping the Lord, it is to yell out loud that "I want & I take back everything that the devil tried to steal from me" because if I'm not careful he can also steal my image of who I am in Christ...Don't be soooo DEEP!!!! Thank God that there is good music out there while worshipping the Lord.

I did enjoy this article, but I personally love the song take it back by Dorinda Clark-Cole. It reminds me of Job no matter how much was taken from him God restored to him more. I feel like the song is uplifting and encouraging to know that God has more in store for us past our present situation and with our authority we can take it back!

I don't think you can judge a song like that. I know that song. And when I had first heard it I had lost everything. My husband my home. Just everything and at the time I heard that song I needed to know I could take back everything the devil had stolen. And ten years after I had lost everything I took it all back. God and I took back everything the devil had stole. I think it all depends on where you are with God and what your going through at time you here a song. Not every song is going to be right for everyone at the same time. For me it was perfect when I heard it. Because sometimes the devil is responsible for what you lose. I got my husband back not a different husband the same one I lost. He was a different person when he came back and I got the same house back I lost. I am not renting it now we are buying it. So maybe that just wasn't the song for you at that time. But it is a good song.

i truly loved this devotional today. it amazes me how we give the devil so much attention in our songs of praise. If we ever understood that God has already conquered the enemy, our songs would begin to change.

In fact, I was discussing this very issue with my wife the other day. I asked her what it would feel like if every time i sung to her, i mentioned the name of someone i used to date, instead of her name.

i'm sure you can imagine what she said. i wonder how God would feel if we asked him the same question? great devotional.

I understand the concept of the article, but linking it to the song is not relevant. The song inspires believers that God is getting ready to give back unto you everything that was stolen from you. We must realize that the devil is our adversary and foe, and his primary purpose is to steal, kill, and destroy. We as believers must be aware that God sees all and is restoring all the years from when the locust devoured our land. Even when we get off track and fall into the traps of the enemy, God will restore and rescue you. We must know the beauty of God, and must be on high alert that the devil is real and busy. Which was the message of the song!

That's a great artist "Israel and New Breed". I often listen to him during my praise and worship time. Another good group to listen to for praise and worship is "MercyMe". Anyone interested in getting more familiar with these groups, please check them out on iTunes and YouTube.

I appreciate your article and while it is true that we are to meditate on the wonder and power of God, we cannot forget that Satan is real and has come to try to defeat us. While in the end he is a defeated foe, to pretend that he is not real is rather "foolish" for lack of a better word. Yes, I love to praise God and I do so EVERYDAY of my life, but I am ever mindful that His enemy and mine, is ALWAYS lerking around going to and fro seeking whom he may devour.
If the Lord did not want us to be aware of this foe, He would not have brought him to our attention from the very beginning of His Word.
I praise God for the wisdom to know that Satan is real and my enemy, I also praise God for the understanding that no matter what I also know that Satan is defeated.
And if we don't testify about how we have overcome the tricks and attacks of the enemy, how can we ever encourage or be witness to someone else who is going through. This song -- Taking It Back, was an encouragement to me during a time in my life when the devil thought he was winning, and truly just the words and the power and conviction behind them, ministered to me, that I, through Jesus Christ, had the power to take back EVERYTHING that Satan THOUGHT he had taken.

God Bless and I am Victorious!!
