ORU, Joyce Meyer Ministries Accredited by Financial Accountability Council
from The Christian Post

Two evangelical Christian institutions under scrutiny for past financial practices have won accreditation from the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability, the group announced Thursday.

Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Okla., and Joyce Meyer Ministries of Fenton, Mo., are now members of the council, which was founded in 1979 in an attempt to provide a sort of stamp of approval and show that evangelical institutions can police themselves.

To win accreditation, the groups must "faithfully demonstrate compliance with established standards for financial accountability, fundraising and board governance," ECFA said.

In 2007, Oral Roberts University fell more than $50 million in the red as then-president Richard Roberts and his wife came under fire for allegedly spending school money on home remodels, lavish vacations and a stable of horses for their daughters. The Robertses have denied any wrongdoing.

Roberts resigned, and the school cut its debt to about $15.4 million as of January, thanks largely to a $70 million pledge from Oklahoma City businessman Mart Green, who took over as board of trustees chairman.

"This accreditation shows our commitment to economic sustainability and accountability and is another milestone in building trust in the new ORU," Green said in a statement.

Joyce Meyer Ministries, headed by the author and inspirational speaker, was one of six large Christian ministries that faced an investigation in November 2007 from Sen. Charles Grassley, the ranking Republican on the Senate Finance Committee.

The probe also received the backing of Sen. Max Baucus of Montana, the committee's Democratic chairman.

Officials for Meyer's group — whose spending on expensive furniture, among other things, received scrutiny — have expressed confidence it would be found in "complete compliance" with financial regulations.

Grassley called the new ECFA accreditation institutions "a positive development" and said: "I hope other ministries, including the ones I'm looking at, will pursue accreditation."

mmmh!...
No minister is supposed to minister unless he conforms to such and such financial standards...sounds no one will be allowed to buy or sell unless they have the mark. Credit crunch, protectionism of the economy and not the people themselves, next it will be controlled buying and selling and then those who buy and sell must conform to certain standards to ensure their economy is controllable; may be the mark will determine who is standard compliant to their needs.

with all do respect, I have a much better idea for Senator chuck grassely, he needs to go find out why his U.S. financial committee team has given Tax payers money to BAIL OUT AIG, GM, bad banks, Freddie Mac, a broken healthcare system, unethical and broken public school systems, rewards teachers who rather sleep with students than teach them, bad parenting, bad performances, irresponsibility, and the list goes on. Where are his watch dogs to investigate wall street CEO's, SEC, OPIC, and others who KNEW exactly what was happening that would lead to this disarray and economic melt down, BUT purposely looked the other way, while getting paid under the table.

I do believe in Accountability, but why should this moral principal only be implied to the church?

Give me a break.......

In other words the Government wants FULL control of how GOOD ethical ministries and churches should give, what they should give to, who they should campaign for, control charitable assets, how large a church should be, and make sure no one who deems to be "kingdom-minded" gets ahead economically according to their political standards. Now, I do enjoy the ministry of Joyce Myers, however, I find it very strange that senator chuck grassley declared her ministry "ethical" or the ONLY ministry that complied with "his demands" upon his finding out she supports GOP’s mission ( whatever that is).

Each ministry according to the IRS and a Key witness for the US Treasury Department who also investigated this matter said, ALL ministries ( TD Jakes, Eddie Long, Creflo Dollar, Benny Hinn, Paula White, Rod Parsley, Joseph Walker III, complied with right standing with ALL IRS rules and guidelines. There is no doubt in my mind someone is feeding this ONE senator a bunch of hot air, and personal dislikes of each leader. I agree with Andrew Young and Martin Luther King III, this senator promoted this investigation with unethical measures and false allegations in the intent to personally destroy each minister.
