Are You A Conservative Or A Liberal?
from The Christian Post

Social, political conservatives differ significantly from liberals regarding religious beliefs, according to a new study that compared the two groups on more than a dozen religious beliefs.

Liberals are dramatically less likely than conservatives to say they believe that the Bible is totally accurate in all of its teachings (27 percent vs. 63 percent, respectively), the survey conducted by The Barna Group found.

Only about a third (38 percent) of liberals say their faith is becoming an increasingly important moral guide in their life. By comparison, 70 percent of conservatives say their faith is an important moral guide.

Also fewer liberals than conservatives believe that a person cannot earn their way into Heaven by doing good deeds or being a good person (23 percent vs. 37 percent).

George Barna, the study’s lead researcher, commented that liberals appear to place more emphasis on “self-reliance” and “what they personally accomplish” than on faith or participation in a faith community.

“They also seem less inclined to trust the Bible as a moral authority or source of truth, and have less involvement in some type of personal relationship with their god.”

In contrast, Barna said conservatives are more active in religious behaviors.

“They are also more connected to their deity, seeing God as more personal, interactive and involved in their lives than do liberals,” the researcher noted.

A little more than half of liberals (54 percent) say their religious faith is very important in their life, compared to 82 percent of conservatives. The importance of faith in the life of a social or political liberal compared to a conservative can also be seen in the difference in church attendance and how they view it.

Thirty-seven percent of liberals say the church they currently attend is very important in helping them find direction and fulfillment in life whereas 62 percent of conservatives say church is important as a guide in their life.

In a typical week, conservatives are more likely than liberals to read the bible other than at church (57 percent, vs. 33 percent); attend religious service (62 percent vs. 35 percent); pray to God other than at a religious service (91 percent vs. 76 percent); share their religious beliefs with others during the past year (56 percent vs. 39 percent, among born-again Christians for each group); and have participated in a short-term missions trip in the U.S. or in another country (12 percent vs. 6 percent).

The survey also found that liberals are more likely than conservatives to develop their own set of religious beliefs rather than adopt those proposed by a church or other entity. More liberals than conservatives also said they are very open to adopting different moral views than the ones they currently have.

The Barna Group based the report on the 3,012 phone interviews with American adults it conducted from August through early November 2008. The sample included 992 adults who described themselves as “mostly conservative” on social and political matters, and 511 adults who described themselves as “mostly liberal” on social and political matters. The rest of the sample described themselves as somewhere between these two groups.

Hey Everyone!

Hold on! I agree that researches and the conclusions that are drawn can be extremely discolored and simply bias. Sometimes the intentions and / or intentions of such surveys can be downright anti-Christ(ian)! However, the article reflects - in part - the outcome of a survey that attempted to see if there was a pattern - or consistency - BETWEEN people who describe THEMSELVES as being either POLITICALLY conservative or POLITICALLY liberal AND how those same people view their Faith - or their practice of religion, to be politically correct...

I my opinion, this type of survey is well within the scope of the management of StreamingFaith to post this article as an article of interest. It gives all of us as a community to discuss, debate, and dissect, and determine new trends of thinking that the Christian Faith may or may not be facing.

Personally, I think that we should refrain from name calling, judging, putting into preconceived categories, and bible-bashing those who we think are not of the pure faith. Let us practice our own Christianity, even on an open forum such as this one. It is in my opinion that every one of us is either politically conservative or politically liberal. It all depends on our individual world view and our understanding of government and administration. Let us respect each others views. This is the foundation of the freedom of speech and our precious democratic freedom.

The question is, How do YOU describe yourself? Is there a relationship between your political beliefs and your religious beliefs? Think about it. What drove you (each one of us) to vote the way we did in the last election?

Think deep, speak slow, learn well.

Looking forward to healthy discussions from you all!

HUH?
Can you be liberal or conservative and still MISS GOD should be the question? And the answer is yes!

God is not holding me accountable to be politically correct, however HE IS holding accountable to be BIBLICALLY correct!

I just find it disturbing that a New Testament Christian would post this article on a supposedly Christian website. What is the purpose of all of this?

Wow, this study is so biased and saddening. When did the children of the Most High ever been reduced to labels such as conservative or liberal? What does politics have to do with us being pruchased of the blood of Christ?. As a child of God I do not consider myself a conservative, and I know my Redeemer is the one who keeps me sanctified through His word- and not some confort in being labelled a conservative. ANd being liberal isn't a hideous either- because not all liberals fall into the same brackets as the ones labelled above. I just think this study is one way of the so-called' conservatives to feel good about themselves and gloat over what they can do in their own strength- insteading of glorying in their weaknesses , they boast of their own efforts.

If we all thought that being conservative and not simply Christian or bought at a price, was enough, then the work of the Cross is useless. I find it offensive that those who gloat in being conservative, whatever that means, would look down to those who try not to be anything else but children of God who when brought to a place of repentance, receive Christ by faith and are no longer slaves to sin but unto righteousness and do not choose to be labelled as being conservatives.

Why don't you just call those you so eloquently described above as 'unbelievers' r heathens', because there are still conservatives who operate under the law and not under Grace- because they still believe that which was powerless and weakened by sinful nature(letter of the law) and not Salvation- which comes by grace and not of works.

Interesting survey result. Politically, I am sincerely conservative. However, concerning christian spiritual matters I describe myself as an almost extreme liberal.

Consider the great christian heresy of all time - no women leaders (elders and pastors) in the evangelical church. What a discriminatory shame and disgrace to the christian faith! There is no difference between male and female. When will the evangelical theological bigots stop twisting the scriptures?

What about the idol worship of the King James Version of the Bible. Think about how much abuse, hurt, and damage that lie has done to the christian faith and image.

What about the notion that Apostle Paul writings just may not be inspired? And what about the Bible being without error? Strange, none of the original authors proclaimed their position to be without error. Sadly, 100 years later, men declared the writings to be inspired and sacred. Is it not mind numbing how we human beings idolize and worship the ancient and the past so easily? I guess the golden calf is still with us today...

What about our inability to let go of denominational ism? The insistence of certain twists of interpretation of scriptures. Where and when did Jesus teach his disciples denominational ism? Perhaps we all need to read John 15 - 17 again...

What about petty theologies - all based on wrong interpretations of the scriptures. Doctrines and practices such as Holy Spirit, baptism, second coming, trinity, and even God Himself. The list is endless and our evangelical shame is without covering...

Where and when it all end? When we will stop following the next biggest christian thing like a bunch of sheep?

God help us all...
