Ministry Description
In 1901 Elder John Hedspeth founded St. Paul Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ. St. Paul was originally named Paul’s Chapel with a membership of ten. The church was located in the old Howard School Building in Taylor’s township in Wilson County. On April 24, 1916 the church purchased land at its present site for fifty dollars. In 1935 a violent storm destroyed the church and services were held in the new Barnes School on Airport Road. After many fundraisers, a new church was built in 1936. A few years later, in 1962 that church was destroyed by fire. Church services were then held each fourth Sunday at Macedonia Church of Christ in Wilson. And then on the fourth Sunday in June 1967, services resumed in the edifice.
November 1976 Elder Chester Aycock became the new Pastor. The second Sunday in May 1990 there was a ground breaking ceremony for the present edifice. The St. Paul Church Family marched into their new sanctuary the second Sunday in February 1991 in which it was dedicated to the Lord. The first revival service in the new edifice was held Monday night before the fourth Sunday in April. By 1994 membership had increased to over three hundred members.
Bishop Aycock was led to begin the New Year with a Holy Ghost revival. The first New Year Revival was held December 31, 1981. Bishop Aycock was the speaker and it lasted for the first two weeks of the New Year. This tradition continues today at St. Paul.
From its inception, the Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ, has had as its mission the dispelling of the darkness in our world, and in the lives of its people, with the light of God’s love and life for us in Jesus Christ. We are propelled into the future by a clear and exciting vision to become a church where persons’ lives are impacted in such a way that they will transform our present world into the Kingdom of God. It is with this vision in mind that, as a church, we EXALT THE SAVIOR by passionately worshipping and praising our God; EVANGELIZE SOCIETY, so that we may love and fellowship with one another; and EQUIP one another to live victoriously and practically as Christians in the world. Together, as we become EMPOWERED THROUGH STEWARDSHIP, we can transform our present world from a pain-filled, problem-controlled, often seemingly purposeless mass of earth, spinning in space to the very place where all persons are blessed abundantly and eternally. It’s called ELEVATING SOCIETY! It’s called the Kingdom of God!
